Downtown Denver, Colorado City Couple Photography
Many couples picture the mountains when they think of their engagement or couple photography session in Colorado. I’ve noticed city sessions becoming more popular and I absolutely LOVE them. Of course the mountains are beautiful, but there is something so charming about the vibe of photoshoot in downtown Denver. I grew up practicing photography in alley ways and in abandoned buildings, and I fell in love with the textures of brick walls, interesting architecture, and light as it leaks through a stairwell or parking garage rooftop. Mekenna reached out over a year ago to book this couple session with her husband Gary, and I was so excited to finally meet them after a year of planning! Mekenna envisioned strolling around the city with her love while holding red roses, and sharing a Coca-Cola cheers at the end of the day. Her inspiration photos showed an effortless, natural, and romantic vibe which is how I’d describe my style of photography. I never want to overly pose someone to look stiff or cheesy. Instead, I like to watch a couple’s dynamic unfold as I help them become more comfortable in front of the camera.
I adored the connection between these two, and they made it so easy to be creative together while being down for all of my prompts and ideas that kept popping into my head. I was having too much fun playing with the lighting in all of the different areas I scouted for them, as nothing gets me more excited than interesting lighting (which is usually strongest right before the sun sets.) After 15 years of photographing couples, I consider myself an expert in finding the right light and creating beautiful photos in any setting. What may look like a doorway or simple storefront to one person is actually a perfect photo opportunity to me.
Another pro to doing your engagement or couple photos in downtown Denver, Colorado is that it is perfect for winter. We did this session in February, and I knew there wouldn’t be any risk of excessive snow, plus usually the weather is warmer in the city versus the mountains. Plus, some nature locations are gorgeous in the Spring-Fall but lose all of their greenery in the winter. We don’t have to worry about dead trees or grass in the city, as it looks pretty much the same year-round! If you are unsure of where to shoot in the city, I’ve got you covered as I spend most of my free time location scouting the coolest spots to take you.
I loved this review from Mekenna: “Truly a wonderful experience! Madeleine made us feel so comfortable the entire session while also giving us a little tour of downtown Denver. She was so kind and welcoming, it felt like I was taking photos with a longtime friend of mine. She will help you pose, bring you into beautiful lighting, and help you feel your best! If you’re looking for any type of couples session or portraits, she is your girl!”
